  6. Function Key Enabler is a System extension that is installed by dragging it to the System Folder.  It allows you to assign up to 30 FKEYs to the function keys on the extended keyboard or on a newer PowerBook.  The number of FKEYs available is doubled by using the Option key while a function key is pressed.  Function Key Enabler works by executing an FKEY when a function key is pressed.  The FKEYs are mapped according to the following chart:

The ﾒｼﾓ symbol in front of the function key number is there to remind you that the option key is held down as this function key is pressed.  To change the FKEY number, FKEYRunApp Maker or ResEdit is required.  See the FKEYRunApp Maker docs to use it.  Here are the instructions for ResEdit:  Open the FKEY resource file and select the desired FKEY by double-clicking on it or pressing Return.  A window similar to the following will open:

  29.   Use Cmd-I to get info on the FKEY and change the number to one desired according to the above chart.  It might also be a good idea to change the FKEY name at this time to whatever is most appropriate for your usage.  This name will show up in the window when the FKEY Display FKEY is used to show the FKEYs installed in your application/System.  The following shows an Info window in ResEdit just after the ID number was changed from 3 to 22 (corresponding to function key F13) and the name was added (use Tab to switch between the two fields):

  47. Close the Info window and then use Copy to copy the FKEY into the clipboard.  Then open the System file and Paste the FKEY into the System.  Save the System and the new FKEY will be available immediately.
